Big (Small) Business

January 1st, 2010 | By Shannon Medisky

With the beginning of each new year, comes the opportunity to reevaluate goals, both personal and business. For the entrepreneur, the two are often intertwined. This can be both a very good and a very challenging fact. Sure, it’s admittedly great to be your own boss. It’s not so great, however, when all your time and energy get poured into your business, eclipsing the importance of time for yourself and family.

I read an old German proverb the other day, “Who begins too much accomplishes little.” I’d have to say I agree. Whether it’s due to being overwhelmed by too many tasks at one time or simply running out of energy from trying to juggle it all, taking on too many goals at one time accomplishes very little other than leaving you frustrated, exhausted and in worse shape than you were before you started.

This year consider looking at the big picture by taking smaller steps. Set goals to grow your small business, but plan to do it in realistic, easier to achieve ways that will ensure you and your business experience success. If you hope to grow your client base, research and become more involved in social media such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. If better bookkeeping is at the top of your business to-do list, get online and start a conversation with other small business owners to find out tips and strategies that work for them. If you’re racking your brain over how to grow your business in general, start scoping out the competition to find out what they’re offering that you’re not.

You may be a small business owner, but to help your business grow and thrive it’s vitally important to have big goals. It’s even more important, though,  to break those big goals down into smaller, more manageable and much more likely to be achieved steps. If you do, your sanity and your business will thank you!
